I can paint a slate for any season. I am constantly coming up with new designs and if you don't see a what you are looking for don't hesitate to call or email me!
Whether it's welcome slate or a slate for a holiday I can create something special just for you! Or just choose from many of the slates I offer online. All are hand painted so they can be customized or personalized as needed .
Spring is a busy time as everybody starts thinking about their garden beds and how they want to decorate them. A hand painted slate will add a personal look to your garden. In addition to garden signs , I have herb markers and slate welcome signs Do you have a favorite saying for the garden? I can create any size slate for your saying.
Most slates can be personalized with your name or house number. You can also choose which colors you, so slight variations from the photos of my work, may occur. Whether it's a painting for inside you home or a personalized welcome slate for outside your home, I can work with you!
During the mid 1800's, quarrying slates was one of the leading
industries of the Peach Bottom region of Pennsylvania and Harford County, MD. Welsh immigrants used their skills and craftsmanship to produce some of the finest slate in the world. The homes of the
surrounding area were all sheltered by roofs of slate. Many of these buildings still exist today but many have been updated with asphalt shingles. I hope to preserve a little bit of history in
these slates, which once adorned the roofs of the homes and barns of York and Lancaster Co, PA and Harford Co, MD.
The majority of my slate has been salvaged from an an old Amish barn, and some is from homes in the local area. You will notice that many other slate crafters just use the slate as it is, with the jagged edges and nail holes still present. All of my slates are hand cut and inspected by myself. The majority of the nail holes are cut off the slate. If the slate is much too big to avoid any nail holes , they are sealed with a durable waterproof epoxy filler. This renders them completely unnoticeable and weatherproof. I've got a large selection of hand painted slates for all seasons from which to choose. Or give me your ideas and I'll create a slate just for you!
I have always enjoyed painting, sewing and other crafts, but painting on slate has become my major craft. After starting with welcome signs, I then included garden signs and herb markers. I have now expanded my line to include little slate Christmas ornaments, sweater pins, and plaques with whimsical sayings and quotes. My work has become so extensive that people started calling me "The Slate Lady"! I had already had the business name of Daydreamer Crafts, so therefore, I decided to name the website Slatelady.com.
Although I love painting on slate I also enjoy working with gourds, creating a variety of birdhouses and large Santa heads and snowmen. These items vary according to the size and shape of how the the gourds are grown. I have shown my work at many local shows in the Harford county, MD and York, PA Please see my page for shows and shops to get current information on future shows.
